One Day Consultative Meeting with Private Sector for Expansion of Salt Iodization In Balochistan
One day consultative meeting with the private sector for expansion of salt iodization (Procurement and distribution of KOI 3 at Commercial Rate) held in Balochistan on 9th March 2016. The objective of the meeting was to encourage and facilitate the private sector for expansion of salt iodization in Balochistan particularly to ensure the procurement and distribution of KOI 3 by the salt processors in the province.
The meeting was started with recitation from the holy Quran followed by a detailed round of introduction of participants.
Dr. Ali Nasir Bugti, Provincial Coordinator BNPMC welcomed the participants and explained the objective of the meeting. Dr. Bugti appreciated the role and efforts of the salt processors of the province in the production and promotion of salt iodization.
Dr. Ali Nasir Bugti Program Manager briefed the participants about important of salt iodization. He said that Iodine is essential for healthy brain development in the fetus and young child. Iodine deficiency negatively affects the health of women, as well as economic productivity and quality of life.
Most people need an additional source of iodine as it is found in relatively small amounts in the diet. Iodization is the process of fortifying salt for human consumption with iodine and is an effective strategy to increase iodine intake at the population level.
While addressing the participants the In-charge Public Analyst Laboratory Mr. Musaweer Tareen apprised that government of Balochsitan has established food testing laboratory.
The representative of the Balochsitan Salt Processors Association (BSPA) and salt processors attended the meeting and extended their support and cooperation in the nutrition program. The President BSPA shared that they are producing 100% iodized salt in Balochistan.
