Seminar conducted about Orientation/ Sensitization to the Parliamentarian’s and Political parties about Malnutrition its effects and enactment of this major issue to their party manifesto.
Senator Usman Kakar has urged the federal and provincial governments to play their due role in controlling malnutrition in Balochistan, saying the provincial nutrition programme must be expanded throughout the province.
“The provincial nutrition programme is limited to only seven districts of the province while the deaths of mothers and children and maternal complexities continue in the rest of the other districts,” said the senator while addressing a one-day political parties and parliamentarian’s seminar held to discuss mother and maternal and child mortality in connection to the nutritional deficiencies’ etc in the province the event was organized by BNPMC . In the event members and political parties’ representatives, and members of international donor agencies were in attendance.
Senator Kakar lauded the contribution of international donors in revamping the health and food plight in Balochistan and said, World Bank, Australian Aid ,UNICEF, WHO, WFP, FAO and others are carrying out their responsibilities in eradicating food insecurity in the province but this drastic situation will be dealt with consolidated revamp approach by all stakeholders. Other parliamentarian’s and speakers elaborated and endorsed that Malnutrition is a major problem that need to be addressed on priority basis as the paradigm of this critical issue. They said, It is estimated that nearly 63 percent of households in the province are food insecure. Although the health authorities have been working to resolve these problems, the security situation along with geographical difficulties of the province and the scattered population make the issue more complex. While on this all political parties representatives endorsed and urged that their parties will add this in their upcoming election manifesto, and assure their full support for the noble cause.
On the occasion Secretary Health Saleh Nasar said, Government of Balochistan is committed to deal with devastating problem and by the same Health Department Nutrition Program / Nutrition Cell is using all its available resources he said, “The provincial government commenced the nutrition programme to halt the growing number of deaths of mother and children during maternity, and nutritional deficiencies’ in Balochistan. Though the programme is limited to seven districts, with available resources it will be expanded to other districts as well.”
Balochistan Nutrition Programme PC Dr.Ali Nasir Bugti said, “Pakistan has a high ratio of deaths due to malnutrition and Balochistan is among the top areas where the number of deaths of mother and children are more than in other provinces.”He said, “Pregnant women should eat calcium and vitamin-rich food. We have to launch awareness campaigns in the rest of Balochistan in this regard.”
