(Quetta); Balochistan is relatively the least developed province of Pakistan. Several studies and reports have found that Balochistan have the lowest levels of human development in the country the province lags behind the rest of the country in economic growth, labor productivity, health, education and other socioeconomic indicators.

Secretary Health Mr. Javed Anwer Shahwani has said that Balochistan Nutrition Program in the province working for the improvised activities of the Nutrition and other correlated activities in a vibrant manner.

Programme Manager Balochistan Nutrition Program Dr. Ali Nasir Bugti said that Balochistan Government under the dynamic visionary leadership of Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Sana Ullah Khan Zehri, Minister Health Mir Rehmat Saleh Baloch and by the guidelines of Secretary health Balochistan Mr. Javed Anwer Shahwani, team Balochistan Nutrition programme for Mothers and Children (BNPMC) is utilizing all its available resources to bring a change in the scenario of malnourishment in the restive province and by this positive results are also coming. 

Provincial Head of Nutrition Program for Mothers and Childeren Balochistan Dr. Ali Nasir Ali Bugti has been awarded Pakistan Civil Society  prestigious award of Quaid-e-Azam Gold Medal for Exemplary Services 2017.

Quetta 08th December 2017 : Secretary Health Javeed Anwar Shahwani told that Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers & Children working on the health of Mothers & Children, they are doing great job and this program needs more improvement and Vast the coverage.Before this the death ratio of children under 5 were massive.

Following the provincial review and planning workshop, a three days Inter Provincial Review and Strategic Workshop, organized by the World Bank was held in PC Hotel, Karachi on 19^th to 21^st September 2017.  Project team from both Balochistan and Sindh, Health Department personnel of Balochistan and Sindh, representatives of PPHI, LHW Program, NGOs attended the workshop.

Balochistan Health Minister Mir Rehmat Saleh Baloch has announced moving a resolution in the next session of the provincial assembly for imposing a nutrition emergency in the province as nutrition situation of mother and child is very serious in the province.

World Bank Mission led by Dr. Tayab Masood, Technical Team Leader WB for BNPMC visited Balochistan to conduct Midterm Review of the Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers & Children.  

Vitamin A supplementation is being implemented with support from the Micronutrient Initiative and UNICEF through Polio NIDS for children 6 to 59 months. This will need to be sustained for coming years as Polio is still not eradicated in Pakistan, along with strengthening government’s mechanism to monitor results.

Quarterly Provincial Coordination Committee (PCC) meeting was arranged at BNPMC office under the chairmainship of Director General Health Balochistan. 

One day long quarterly meeting of Provincial Fortification Alliance (PFA) Balochistan held at Quetta. Mr. Asmat Ullah Khan, Secretary Health chaired the meeting. 

A meeting was facilitated by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) between Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Bank & Multi-Donor Trust Fund-Nutrition Balochistan Nutrition Project for Mothers and Children (BNPMC) team at Serena Quetta. 

Three days long consultative workshop was organized on 9^th – 11^th May at Quetta Serena Hotel to present the IYCF strategy draft to relevant stake-holders in-order to incorporate their feedback and suggestions. 

PMU has conducted refresher training for LHWs, CMWs, paramedics and NGOs staff of program focused districts, Sibi, Kohlu, Noshki, Kharan, Panjgoor, Killa Saifullah and Zhob. A total number of 1319 field staff have been trained.

Mr. Asmatullah Khan Kakar Secretary Health Government of Balochistan visited Stabilization Centre (SC) Out-patient Therapeutic Centers(OTPs) of Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers & Children established at District Headquarter Hospital and various union councils of district Panjgur.

In the health system covered areas the implementation of the Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers and Children is primarily through Lady Health Worker Program (LHW program) and People’s Primary Health Initiative (PPHI).

Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers and Children (BNPMC) in collaboration of PPHI Sibi has setup five days’ nutrition stall at exhibition area of historical Sibi mela (Festival).

Dr. Saeed Ahmed Jamali Commissioner Sibi division visited OTP Centre at DHQ hospital Kohlu he was welcomed by the Distrct Nutrition officer Mr. Sami Zarkoon and Mir. Asif Baloch OTP in-charge.

The technical nature of the nutrition program and the limited number of experienced (nutrition specific) people calls for rigorous training and capacity building initiatives. An important function of the BNPMC is to technically strengthen the nutrition program in terms of building capacities of the key staff and partners for an effective service delivery and to enable the program (Nutrition Cell) in evolving as premier technical body for all nutrition related matters in the province. 

Parallel to development of the Nutrition BCC Strategy and the field implementation of the nutrition activities the IEC materials have also been developed and placed at all health centers ensuring that the key nutrition messages and practices are available with the health staff as well as the communities in printed form.

Social & Behavioral Change Communication (SBCC) is one of the important component of Balochsitan Nutrition Program for Mothers & Children to pursued the community for adoption of healthy behaviors regarding nutrition of pregnant, lactating woman, adolescent girls, infants and young children. 

Maternal (MMR) 785 per 100,000 live births and Infant mortality rate (IMR) 111 per 1000 is highest in Pakistan among other developing countries as shown by various surveys and reports. The condition in rural areas of Balochistan is rather worst. 

The national nutrition survey 2011 depicts a high percentage of women (29 %) and children (35 %) in Balochistan with iodine deficiency. The only easy and cost-effective way to address the situation is to improve the intake of iodine by these groups by ensuring 100% salt iodization in the province. 

The severely malnourished children (SAM) are categorized as SAM-with complications and SAM-without complications.SAM children without complications are treated in the Outpatient Therapeutic Program (OTPs) while the ones having complications are initially admitted in the Stabilization Centers (SCs) for treatment of medical complications and subsequently shifted to the OTPs for further treatment. 

Mir Rehmat Saleh Baloch, provincial Minister Health government of Bbalochsitan inaugurated the official website (www.bnpmc.gob.pk ) of the Provincial Nutrition Cell. 

A total number of 147 Outpatient Therapeutic Centers (OTPs) have been established in the BNPMC focused districts (Kharan, Zhob, Killasaifullah, Kharan, Noshki, Panjgur & Kohlu). 

Pakistan is bearing a massive burden of malnutrition lead morbidity and mortality with Balochistan being no exception. Malnutrition is a problem faced by every district and every village in the province. Due to the limited coverage of the nutrition programs a high number of malnourished children die and those who somehow survive face lifelong devastating consequences in shape of stunted growth and impaired cognitive development, inhibiting them to become productive adults. 

One day consultative meeting with the private sector for expansion of salt iodization (Procurement and distribution of KOI 3 at Commercial Rate) held in Balochistan on 9^th March 2016. The objective of the meeting was to encourage and facilitate the private sector for expansion of salt iodization in Balochistan particularly to ensure the procurement and distribution of KOI 3 by the salt processors in the province.

A group of 30 students comprising of 10 females of Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITMS) visited Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers and Children. 

The District Nutrition team at Sibi arranged one day review the implementation of BNMPC in district Sibi. Mr. Saif-ur-Rehman Hketran Deputy Commissioner presided the meeting.

A day long consultative seminar held on legislation for wheat fortification was arranged by the BNMPC at Quetta. The legal consultant, advocate Mr. Kaleenullah Quresh presented the 1st draft of “The Balochistan Wheat Fortification Regulation, 2016” with the participants.

Two days orientation and planning meeting held with District Nutrition Officers (DNOs) of all seven focused districts.

Balochistan Nutrition Program for Mothers and Children (BNPMC) has organized screening camp for children under five with the support of PPHI at Panjgur.

Two-day district review and training workshop were arranged for Districts Nutrition Officers of seven programs focused districts. The objective of the workshop was to review the progress in light of district annual work plans and to conduct their training.The 1st day of the workshop district nutrition officers delivered a detailed presentation sharing progress, way-forward and constrains. 

Balochistan is among the provinces of Pakistan with alarming rates of malnutrition lead child morbidity and mortality. 

An extensive training program was conducted in all seven districts. A total of 1136 health personnel were trained in three different tiers depending upon the services they have to provide.

To address the need of the LHWs regarding the counseling of mother support groups in monthly meetings the program has developed counseling cards on Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF) messages.

Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) purchased though UNICEF (the contract is for sole sourcing UNICEF to procure from international market) is one of the important component of the project

At the district level the District Nutrition Officers (DNOs) have already started their activities by forming the District Coordination Committees which are spearheaded by the District Health Officers.

As per agreed action plan with World Bank a field workers manual has been developed listing the primary responsibilities of (Lady Health Workers (LHW5 , Community Midwives (CMWs), & Community Health Workers (CHWs) at the field Level.
